It is so easy to follow the crowd. I remember as a teen I always wanted to be with the “cool” group. I listened to the music they listened to, even though is wasn’t my favorite. I cut my hair to the latest style, and wore clothes that were “in” at that time. I’m pretty sure most teens go through this.
As adults it is also easy to follow the crowd, but the consequences can be far worse than wearing bell bottoms or listening to a certain kind of music. The crowd that draws us is often filled with judgment and hate, ridicule and scorn, and clouds our thinking to the point where we no longer speak for ourselves and our beliefs.
God blesses those who stand up for Him. He prospers us in many ways; peace that passes all understand is ours when we read His Word and and walk in His promises. This life is not all there is. Romans 8:6 reminds us, “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Our life on earth is brief in light of eternity and we can only have peace when we meditate on God’s Word day and night.
Today, let us make a resolution to turn off the news and open our Bibles to the New Testament so we can get a whole new perspective on what “following the crowd” means. Together let us bring America back to God. And to pray as Franklin D. Roosevelt, our 32nd President, prayed on D – Day, June 6, 1944, “Almighty God: our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity…With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy. Help us to conquer the apostles of greed and racial arrogances. Lead us to the saving of our country, and with our sister nations into a world unity that will spell a sure peace – a peace invulnerable to the scheming of unworthy men. And a peace that will let all men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil.”
Lord, Your Word has given us counsel on how we should relate to and act toward one another. May we be steadfast and immovable in our commitment to You and to one another. Let our roots go deep into Your Word to praise and glorify Your name. May our weakness be Your strength and our purpose in life be to honor You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
